Project controls and AI are moving fast. A credential earned once but never refreshed loses meaning. Continuing professional development (CPD) keeps certified professionals current, and keeps every PCI credential a credible signal of capability over time.

Certification is maintained over a defined cycle through ongoing professional development — learning, applying and contributing. The required activities, hours and cycle length will be published with the recertification rules before the first renewals are due.
The AI-currency component
Because the credential covers AI-enabled project controls, the CPD framework includes a deliberate AI-currency element. Professionals keep pace with responsible use, governance and emerging tools, consistent with the AI ethics standard — so the credential keeps meaning as technology evolves.

What counts as development
CPD is broader than courses. The framework recognises three kinds of activity, and a healthy cycle draws on all three.
Learning
Structured study with a purpose — courses, webinars, conference sessions, directed reading. The test is what you can do afterwards that you could not do before.
Applying
Deploying a method for the first time on live work: your first quantitative risk analysis, a new forecasting basis, a governed AI workflow. Stretch counts.
Contributing
Giving capability back — mentoring, peer review, authoring, chapter or committee service. Teaching a method is the strongest evidence that you hold it.
Keeping a log that survives audit
Audit is sample-based, so keep records as though yours will be picked. The habit is light if you build it early:
- Log activities as they happen, not at renewal time — reconstruction is where records fail;
- Give each entry four things: what you did, when, how long, and the learning outcome in one honest sentence;
- Attach lightweight evidence — a certificate, an agenda, an artefact you produced;
- Note application: what changed in your practice as a result.
Records are submitted through the CPD submission route when your cycle requires them.
Spreading a cycle — and keeping AI currency real
The professionals who find recertification easy are the ones who spread development across the cycle instead of discovering the requirement in its final months. Plan against your gaps: the Body of Knowledge domains where your confidence is thinnest are where CPD buys the most. The AI-currency component deserves particular pacing, because tools and governance expectations change faster than any renewal cycle — a single course at the start of a cycle will be stale by its end, so little and often wins. If circumstances genuinely intervene — illness, a career break — support and remediation routes under the recertification process come before any effect on certification status.

Activity counts across four categories — structured learning, learning through work, contribution to the profession, and formal study — because real development rarely happens in classrooms alone. Reflection is the unit of value: what changed in your practice, not hours logged.
