Overview
PCI believes capability matters more than credentials on paper. The PCL-AI has a single, clear entry requirement designed to be fair and accessible, while ensuring candidates bring real professional experience to the assessment.
Eligibility is built around demonstrated capability rather than a single rigid qualification. The aim is to keep the credential open to the people who actually do project-controls work — whether they came through engineering, construction, finance or a non-traditional route — while making sure every candidate can meet the standard the exam sets. Where a candidate is close to the threshold, the emphasis falls on relevant, verifiable experience.
Because the certification is competence-based, the requirement focuses on what you can do across the thirteen domains, including the governed use of AI. Meeting the eligibility criteria confirms you are ready to be assessed; it does not, by itself, confer the credential — that is earned by passing the independent examination.

Common questions
Do I need a degree?
No — a specific degree is not required. The entry requirement for certification is based on relevant professional experience, around three years in any field, rather than a particular academic qualification. This is deliberate: it keeps the credential open to capable people who came into project controls through many different routes, while the independent assessment ensures everyone meets the same standard.
Does my experience have to be in project controls?
No. Experience in any field qualifies you to apply; the assessment tests the capability itself.
How is experience checked?
You confirm it at application and may be asked for evidence; PCI may verify on a sample basis.

How to count your three years
The three-year requirement is measured in real professional experience, counted on a full-time-equivalent basis — not in job titles or calendar years of employment. Before you apply, tally it honestly:
- Part-time work counts pro rata. Two years at half-time contributes roughly one year towards the requirement.
- Concurrent roles count once. Holding two positions over the same period does not double the time.
- Self-employment and contracting count, provided you can describe the work and, if asked, point to something that verifies it — contracts, invoices or a client contact.
- Career breaks do not reset the clock. Experience accumulated either side of a gap still counts in full.
Because PCI verifies on a sample or risk basis, keep a simple record alongside your application: role titles, dates, a one-line description of what you actually did, and a person who could confirm it. If your application is selected for verification, that file turns a slow exchange into a quick one.
Eligible is not the same as ready
Meeting the entry requirement means you may be assessed; it says nothing about whether you would pass today. The honest self-check is against the exam itself, not your CV. Work through the Body of Knowledge domain by domain and mark each one confident, patchy or new — then attempt the sample questions under time pressure before deciding when to book. Candidates arriving from adjacent fields typically find their gaps cluster in earned value, project finance or governed AI rather than spreading evenly.
What happens if my eligibility is queried?
You will be asked for supporting evidence and given a fair opportunity to provide it — a query is a check, not a rejection. If eligibility is ultimately declined, the reasons are given in writing and the decision can be challenged through the decision review process.
I am short of three years — should I apply anyway?
No. Eligibility is confirmed at the point of application, so wait until you genuinely meet it. Use the intervening time to prepare: student membership gives structured access to study resources, and preparation started early rarely goes to waste.
