What counts, and what evidence looks like
CPD is judged on relevance and reflection, not hours alone. Structured learning, on-the-job stretch (a first-of-type baseline, a claims analysis, an AI-assisted risk study you governed), contribution to the profession and formal study can all count — say what you did, what changed in your practice, and keep evidence you could show if sampled.
Submissions are sampled for verification each cycle under the CPD framework. Honest, modest entries sail through; padded logs are the thing that fails. Questions before submitting? Ask first.
Activities you can record
CPD is broader than courses. The CPD Framework recognises several types of activity — the common thread is that the activity developed your competence and you can evidence it.
Structured learning
Courses, webinars, workshops and formal study. Evidence: a certificate of completion, enrolment record or attendance confirmation.
Work-based learning
Applying a new method, tool or standard on a live project; secondments; taking on a materially new controls responsibility. Evidence: a short reflective note plus something that anchors it — a role description or deliverable reference.
Contributing to the profession
Mentoring, presenting, writing, chapter volunteering. Evidence: the output itself, or confirmation from the organiser.
Self-directed study
Reading standards, research and technical literature with a purpose. Evidence: a brief note of what you studied and what changed in your practice.
Making your submission easy to accept
Reviewers are looking for honest development, not paperwork volume. Three habits make submissions straightforward:
- Record as you go. A five-minute note at the time beats reconstruction months later — and dates and hours will be accurate rather than guessed.
- Say what you learned, not just what you attended. One sentence on how the activity changed your practice is worth more than a long agenda.
- Claim hours honestly. CPD feeds recertification, and integrity in small records is part of the professional standard itself.
Timing and review
When should I submit CPD?
Any time during your cycle — steady recording beats a deadline scramble. Submissions are acknowledged and count toward the cycle in which the activity took place.
What if an activity isn't accepted?
You will be told why, and what would strengthen it — clearer evidence, a fuller reflection, or reclassification under a different activity type. One declined entry is a review outcome, not a penalty, and does not jeopardise the rest of your record.

What a strong entry looks like
"Led first quantitative schedule risk analysis on a live programme (Mar–May). Built the model, ran workshops to calibrate ranges, challenged an AI-generated correlation set that inflated P80 — corrected inputs changed the contingency recommendation by a material margin. Practice change: I now document model assumptions for independent review before results are briefed." Specific, dated, reflective, evidenced.
Contrast the padded version — "attended risk training, 8 hours" — which says nothing about changed practice. Quality of reflection, not volume of hours, is what sampling verifies.
