Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about the PCL-AI credential, the examination, the AI standard and membership. Can't find it here? Talk to us.

The credential
What are the PCI certifications?

The PCI AI Project Controls Leader (PCI PCL-AI) is a single, rigorous credential covering project controls, cost engineering and project finance, with the governed use of artificial intelligence treated as part of the discipline. It is awarded by the Project Controls Institute and built with reference to ISO/IEC 17024 personnel-certification principles.

Who are the PCI certifications for?

It is for the people who hold major projects to plan, cost and cash flow: planners, schedulers, cost engineers, project-controls and PMO professionals, and project-finance specialists across construction, energy, infrastructure and software.

Are PCI certifications accredited?

PCI is an independent certifying body. Our examinations are being developed with reference to ISO/IEC 17024. We describe our status honestly at every stage and make no claims beyond what is true today.

Exam & enrolment
How do I qualify to sit the exam?

There are two routes: an experience route for practitioners with relevant project-controls experience, and a foundation route for those newer to the field. Full eligibility criteria are confirmed during enrolment.

What does the examination involve?

The exam tests applied judgement rather than recall: scenario-based multiple-choice questions across the thirteen domains (61 Knowledge Areas), weighted 40% project accounting & finance, 40% project management principles and 20% governed AI. It is proctored, online or at a test centre.

How is the credential maintained?

The PCL-AI runs on a three-year continuing-professional-development (CPD) cycle. Membership keeps your credential current and tracks your CPD.

How much does it cost?

Fees for the inaugural cohort are confirmed at enrolment. Members receive reduced rates on examinations and events.

The AI standard
Why is AI part of a project-controls credential?

Because AI is already in the toolkit. The PCL-AI assesses the applied, governed use of AI across forecasting, risk and reporting — not generic AI literacy. Every output a certified professional relies on must be explainable, validated and owned by a competent human. In short: AI proposes; the professional disposes.

Membership & employers
What does membership include?

Membership provides recertification and CPD tracking, a verifiable digital credential designed for recognition by employers, body-of-knowledge and AI-practice updates, and member rates on examinations and events.

Can my organisation certify a whole team?

Yes. Employers can upskill an existing function or build a new project-controls capability to one benchmarked standard. Read more for employers or contact us about team enrolment.

Independence & verification
Does PCI also sell exam preparation?

No. PCI develops and owns the standard and the examination. Preparation and training are provided separately by Certuvo, our official partner. This separation supports the impartiality expected of a body developed with reference to ISO/IEC 17024 personnel-certification principles.

How can I verify someone's credential?

Use the credential lookup on the Verify page to confirm a professional's PCL-AI status.

Before you apply

Getting ready to enrol

A little preparation makes the application itself straightforward. These are the questions candidates most often ask before starting.

What should I gather before starting my application?

Have a clear account of your project-controls experience ready — the roles you held, the projects you worked on and what you were responsible for — along with any relevant education. Make sure the name you enrol under matches your official identification, as identity is checked before the examination.

How long should I allow for preparation?

It depends on your starting point. Experienced practitioners usually need to close specific gaps — often project finance or governed AI — rather than learn the discipline from scratch. Read the Body of Knowledge first and self-assess honestly against each domain before setting a study plan.

What if I need adjustments to sit the exam?

PCI provides reasonable adjustments so the examination tests competence, not circumstance. Request them through the special accommodations process before you book, so arrangements are agreed in advance.

After the exam

Results, retakes and challenges

The process does not end when you submit your answers. Here is what to expect afterwards.

When will I receive my result?

Results are released within the published window once quality checks are complete. Every result is a human decision: automated scoring may support the process, but a competent person confirms the outcome before it is issued.

Can I retake the exam if I do not pass?

Yes. The retake policy sets out how attempts work, the interval between them and how to rebook. A near-miss usually calls for targeted revision of specific domains rather than repeating your whole preparation.

What if I believe a decision about me is wrong?

Ask for a review first — the decision review page explains how — and if you remain unsatisfied, the appeals process provides a formal, independent route. Both routes are documented, so you know what to expect at each step.
