PCI AI Project Controls Leader
The integrated project-controls credential: planning, cost engineering, earned value, forecasting, risk and project finance with the governed use of AI.
The flagship PCL-AI credential certifies a professional who can plan, measure, forecast, control and finance any project — and apply AI to that work responsibly.
There are three ways to be recognised by the Project Controls Institute. The examined PCL-AI credential is always earned the same way — by passing the examination — whichever route brings you in.

A limited founding cohort, joined by invitation during the founding stage. Founding members receive membership, study and examination access and are recognised as early builders of the standard — the credential is still earned by passing the exam. About founding membership →
A board-conferred recognition of distinguished contribution to the profession. It involves no examination and is conferred by the board, not applied for — a separate recognition that is never an examined PCI certification. About honorary recognition →
PCL-AI unites project controls, cost engineering and project finance into a single, rigorous standard, built on extensive project-management foundations, with AI embedded across every domain of the Body of Knowledge and a dedicated AI domain carrying the systematic treatment. It is not a generic AI badge and not a project-management certificate — it is a modern project-controls credential.
Already working in controls, cost or project finance? Apply directly, prepare with Certuvo, and sit your PCI examination.
Newer to the field? The PCI Foundation builds the fundamentals and feeds directly into the PCI certifications.
Keep your credential current through a three-year CPD cycle, with a mandatory AI-currency component.
Project controls decides whether the world's largest investments succeed — yet the field has lacked a single, rigorous credential covering the whole discipline and the AI now reshaping it. Generic project-management certificates don't go deep on controls; vendor courses teach tools, not judgement. The PCL-AI exists to close that gap.
One credential across planning, cost, earned value, forecasting, risk and finance — not a fragment.
AI embedded in every domain, plus a dedicated AI domain — always governed by a human.
Criterion-referenced, ISO/IEC 17024-referenced, and owned by no vendor.
The PCL-AI certifies a connected competency model — the full controls discipline across the thirteen domains of the Body of Knowledge, weighted 40 % project accounting & finance, 40 % project management principles and 20 % governed AI, with AI governance as a first-class competency rather than an afterthought.
The double-entry model, the financial statements, accruals and project cost coding — the grammar every project number is written in.
Revenue from contracts (IFRS 15 at its heart), contract assets and liabilities, and the standards that shape project numbers.
Classed estimates, time-phased budgets, defensible EACs and project cash flow — forecasting leaders can act on.
Flexed budgets, variance bridges, KPI design and reporting by exception — turning numbers into decisions.
Commitments, accruals and actuals; control accounts, work authorisation and quantity control — the true cost exposure.
EV, the indices and the productivity factor; EAC methods selected and defended, not just computed.
Contract types from lump sum to man-hour rates; variations, claims, retention, BoQ and the billing-to-revenue loop.
Initiating to closing — evidence-based gates, benefits, decision latency, stakeholders and communication.
Scrum, Kanban and flow metrics measured honestly; AgileEVM and hybrid governance without breaking delivery.
Networks, float and the critical path; compression economics, drag, delay analysis and honest progressing.
O2C, P2P and time-and-expense; three-way match, segregation of duties, process mining and working capital.
Registers quantified with EMV and Monte Carlo; contingency set against P-levels, correlation and appetite.
Applying AI across the controls lifecycle with governed judgement — validating, explaining and owning AI-assisted outputs so accountability stays with a competent human.
The PCL-AI is assessed across all thirteen Body of Knowledge domains together — 61 Knowledge Areas, organised in three published groups: 40 % project accounting & finance (Domains 1–4), 40 % project management principles (Domains 5–12) and 20 % AI knowledge & practical approach (Domain 13). AI is examined throughout: every domain carries embedded “AI in this domain” coverage, and Domain 13 carries the systematic treatment.
| Domain group | Domains | Exam weight |
|---|---|---|
| Project accounting & finance | D1 Foundations of Accounting for Project Controls · D2 Financial Reporting & the Standards · D3 Budgeting & Forecasting · D4 Performance Management, Variance Analysis & Management Reporting | 40 % |
| Project management principles | D5 Cost Management & Cost Control · D6 Earned Value Management & Forecasting (EVM/EAC) · D7 Contracts, Commercial Management, BoQ, Invoicing & Revenue · D8 Project Management Lifecycle · D9 Agile, Scrum & Adaptive Delivery for Project Controls · D10 Project Scheduling · D11 Business Process Cycles (O2C, P2P & the control environment) · D12 Risk Management for Project Controls | 40 % |
| AI knowledge & practical approach | D13 AI for Project Controls & PM: Concepts, Tools & Practice | 20 % |
The domain groups and their 40/40/20 weighting are those of the published PCL-AI Body of Knowledge, First Edition. Item counts will be confirmed by a formal job-task analysis, and the pass mark will be set by a modified-Angoff standard-setting study before the examination goes live, in line with ISO/IEC 17024 personnel-certification principles.
Every PCL-AI holder receives a verifiable digital badge and a print-ready certificate. Employers and clients can confirm a professional's status instantly — no phone calls, no doubt.
Anyone can check a credential against PCI's register — instant, independent confirmation that a professional holds a PCI credential.

The PCI AI Project Controls Leader (PCI PCL-AI) is PCI's credential. It certifies demonstrated competence across the integrated project-controls discipline — from planning and cost control to AI governance — through an independent, scenario-based assessment.
Practising controls professionals — planners, schedulers, cost engineers, risk and controls managers, PMO staff — and capable people moving into the field. The entry requirement is based on relevant professional experience (around three years) rather than a specific qualification.
PCI is building toward formal accreditation rather than claiming it. The credential and its processes are designed around the ISO/IEC 17024 framework. We state our status plainly and do not imply recognition we do not yet hold — that honesty is part of how a credible certification body earns trust.
It certifies the whole controls discipline as one integrated competence, and treats AI governance as a core part of it rather than an add-on — built for how controls work is done now. PCI does not claim equivalence with, or endorsement from, other certification bodies.
No. The certification decision is independent and based on your assessed competence, not attendance on any course — and no preparation guarantees a pass. That separation between training and assessment is what makes the credential credible.
The examination blueprint tells you what to study; the harder question is how. Good preparation starts with an honest gap analysis: score yourself against each of the thirteen domains, then spend your time in proportion to the published weighting and your weaknesses rather than your comfort. Because every question is scenario-based, reading alone is poor preparation — you need to practise deciding under time pressure.
Work through the body of knowledge and mark every topic as know it, can apply it, or gap. Most practitioners are strong in two or three domains and thinner elsewhere — planners often under-prepare finance and accounting; cost engineers often under-prepare schedule logic.
Work the sample questions the way the exam works: a situation, four defensible-looking actions, one best answer. Note why each wrong option is wrong — that reasoning is what the real exam rewards.
AI appears in every domain, not only in Domain 13 — which itself carries 20 % of the examination. Practise the governed workflow: challenge an AI-assisted forecast, identify what would need validating, and decide what a professional is prepared to sign off.
You declare your experience in the application — roles, dates and a brief description of your responsibilities. It can come from any field, not only project controls, and PCI may verify what you declare. State it accurately: a misstatement is treated as an integrity matter, not a paperwork error. Full detail is on the eligibility requirements page.
Yes. The examination is delivered under live proctoring either online or at a test centre — the content, rules and scoring are identical. If you choose the online route, check the technical and room requirements on the remote proctoring page well before exam day, not the night before.
An unsuccessful attempt does not end your candidacy. You can sit the examination again under the published retake policy, and the most productive response is a fresh gap analysis: return to the blueprint, identify the domains that let you down, and rebuild your preparation there rather than repeating the same revision.
