Candidate Journey.

From exploring the credential to certification and beyond — the PCL-AI candidate journey, step by step.

Candidates studying together

1 · Explore

Review the certification overview, body of knowledge, candidate handbook, examination rules and accreditation status.

2 · Check eligibility

The entry requirement is three years of professional experience in any field — the only prerequisite. See the eligibility requirements for detail.

3 · Prepare

Prepare through self-study, employer training, experience or preparation resources. Preparation through Certuvo or any other provider does not guarantee exam success or certification.

4 · Apply

Submit application details and required information when registration is open.

5 · Sit the examination

Follow all exam rules, identification requirements and security policies. The examination is scenario-based and sat fully online under remote proctoring.

6 · Certification decision

PCI reviews results and certification requirements according to published policies, independently of any preparation provider.

7 · Receive your credential

Successful candidates may receive a certificate and digital badge, used according to the use-of-marks and digital-badge policy.

8 · Maintain certification

Certified professionals follow the code of ethics and meet recertification requirements through a CPD cycle.

What the journey is really testing

The steps above are deliberately straightforward, because the difficulty is not administrative — it is the standard itself. The examination does not reward memorising definitions; it puts you in realistic project situations and asks you to make and justify decisions, the way a competent professional does on the job.

That includes judging whether an AI-generated schedule or forecast can be trusted. The journey, end to end, is designed to confirm one thing: that you can integrate the whole controls discipline and govern the AI that now assists every part of it.

Preparing well

There is no single required course, and completing any preparation does not guarantee a pass — the credential depends on your assessed competence, not your attendance. The most effective preparation is honest: identify the competencies you use least day to day, and focus your effort there.

PCI's resources and community are intended to help you prepare and understand the standard, and your real project experience is itself preparation. The aim is to arrive ready to demonstrate genuine capability.

Common questions

How long does the journey take?

It depends on your preparation — the pathway is online and self-paced, so you can move at a pace that suits your experience and schedule.

Do I need a degree to start?

No. Eligibility is based on relevant professional experience (around three years) rather than a specific qualification.

Does any course guarantee a pass?

No. The certification decision is independent and based on your assessed competence, not attendance on any course — and no preparation guarantees a pass. That separation between training and assessment is what makes the credential credible.

What is the exam actually like?

Scenario-based — it puts you in realistic project situations, including judging AI-assisted work, and asks you to make and justify decisions.

Why this matters

A certification is only worth holding if it is genuinely hard to fake. That is why every PCI certification rests on an independent, competence-based assessment, a clear standard, and a strict separation between training and the certification decision — so a pass means the same thing for everyone who earns it, and an employer can rely on it without re-testing the person themselves.

PCI builds in the open: candid about what is in place today, designed around the ISO/IEC 17024 personnel-certification principles, and careful never to imply recognition it does not yet hold. That honesty is not a caveat — it is the foundation a credible credential is built on.

  • Substance over marketing
  • Fair, transparent process
  • Honesty about our status
  • Responsible, governed use of AI

What to have ready at each stage

The journey runs more smoothly when the administrative details are settled early, so that the only thing on your mind on exam day is the exam itself. Three things deserve attention well before you book.

Identity documents

The name on your application must match the identification you present at the examination. Check this when you apply, not the night before — correcting a mismatch takes far longer than avoiding one.

Workspace and equipment

The examination is sat online under remote proctoring, so you need a quiet, private room, a reliable connection and a computer that meets the technical requirements. Run the checks in advance and know what you would do if your connection dropped.

Adjustments and access

If you need reasonable adjustments — extra time, assistive technology or similar — request them through the special accommodations process when you apply, not after you have booked a sitting.

Safeguards along the way

A credible certification journey needs more than a happy path. Every stage has a published safeguard, and knowing where each one sits removes much of the anxiety from the process.

  • Not successful first time? The retake policy sets out how and when you may sit the examination again. An unsuccessful attempt ends a sitting, not your candidacy.
  • Disagree with a decision? Certification decisions can be challenged through the published appeals process, which is handled separately from the people who made the original decision.
  • Concerned about the process itself? Issues with how something was run — rather than the outcome it produced — go through the complaints route, and raising one never counts against your application.

None of these routes penalise you for using them. They exist because a fair process has to keep working even when the outcome is not the one you hoped for.
