Certification Lifecycle.

The full journey of a credential — from award to renewal, suspension or reinstatement.

Overview

A credential is not a one-off event but a relationship. This page sets out the full lifecycle of the PCL-AI so candidates and employers understand how it is earned, maintained, renewed, and — if necessary — suspended or withdrawn.

In practice

Suspension, withdrawal and reinstatement

PCI applies this consistently and records what it does, so the process can be checked and improved. The detail is governed by the related policies linked below and is published as the institute matures.

The lifecycle, stage by stage

A credential is a relationship, not a one-off. It runs through clear stages — with defined routes for suspension, withdrawal and reinstatement where needed.

1

Award

Earn a PCI credential through independent assessment.

2

Maintain

Keep it current with continuing professional development.

3

Recertify

Renew on a defined cycle to show ongoing competence.

4

Reinstate

A clear route back if a credential lapses or is suspended.

Common questions

How long does a credential last?

It is maintained over a defined cycle through CPD and renewed each cycle.

Can a credential be withdrawn?

Yes — for misconduct, under the sanctions policy, with defined reinstatement routes.

What if I don’t recertify?

The credential lapses, with reinstatement routes set out in this lifecycle.

Why this matters

A certification is only worth holding if it is genuinely hard to fake. That is why every PCI certification rests on an independent, competence-based assessment, a clear standard, and a strict separation between training and the certification decision — so a pass means the same thing for everyone who earns it, and an employer can rely on it without re-testing the person themselves.

PCI builds in the open: candid about what is in place today, designed around the ISO/IEC 17024 personnel-certification principles, and careful never to imply recognition it does not yet hold. That honesty is not a caveat — it is the foundation a credible credential is built on.

Stage by stage

Each stage, unpacked

The overview names the states; this is what each one means in practice — what triggers it, what you must do, and how it affects the way you may present yourself.

Award

Granted after a certification decision confirms eligibility, assessment and agreement to the Code of Ethics. The award date starts your certification cycle.

Maintain

Between renewals, you keep the credential live through continuing professional development recorded under the CPD Policy.

Renew

Before the cycle ends, you apply through recertification, evidencing your CPD and continued agreement to PCI's standards.

Lapse & reinstatement

A credential not renewed in time lapses rather than disappearing. Reinstatement is possible within the published window, with requirements proportionate to the gap.

Suspension

A temporary state, used while an issue — a conduct allegation, an unmet renewal condition — is investigated or resolved. A suspended credential must not be presented as current.

Withdrawal

The end of the relationship: for serious misconduct, or at the holder's own request. Withdrawal for cause follows due process, with a right of appeal.

Good standing

Habits that keep a credential healthy

Most lifecycle problems are administrative, not disciplinary — and almost all are avoidable:

  • Record CPD as it happens, not in a scramble before renewal.
  • Keep your contact details current so renewal notices actually reach you.
  • Respond to any request from PCI within the published window — silence is what turns small issues into suspensions.
  • Represent your status accurately. Verification shows the truth anyway; the professionals the credential is built for would not want it otherwise.

For employers, the lifecycle is the reading key for the register: certified means current, not merely “once passed”. If a CV and the registry disagree, the registry wins.

Common questions

Renewal and reinstatement

What happens if I miss my renewal date?

The credential lapses and should no longer be presented as current. Within the published window you can apply for reinstatement; the longer the gap, the more you may need to evidence to demonstrate continued competence.

Can a withdrawn credential ever be regained?

It depends on the grounds. A voluntarily relinquished credential can be pursued again through the normal route. Where withdrawal was for cause, any return is governed by the terms of the sanctions decision.
