The AI in Project Controls (AIPC) certificate certifies that you can apply machine learning, predictive analytics and generative AI to real project-controls work — and govern it responsibly. It covers the same dedicated AI domain that sits inside the flagship PCL-AI — Domain 13 of the thirteen-domain Body of Knowledge — assessed on its own.
The governing principle is unchanged: every output a credential-holder relies on must be explainable, validated and owned by a competent human. AI proposes; the professional disposes. This is a credential in judgement, not button-pushing.
The core follows an iterative, data-centric AI delivery lifecycle — aligned to CRISP-DM and AI-project methodologies such as CPMAI (for educational alignment only) — and covers model evaluation, operationalisation and MLOps.

What does the AI element of the credential certify?
That you can govern AI in controls work — judge whether an AI output can be trusted, explain it, and own the decision — not merely operate AI tools. It is assessed as a core competency, in realistic scenarios.
Do I need to be technical or a data scientist?
No. The focus is professional judgement, not building AI systems. You need to use AI-assisted tools critically and take responsibility for the results, which is what competent controls work now requires.
Why does project controls need an AI-focused credential?
Because AI is already part of how schedules, costs, risk and forecasts are produced, and the risk is not that professionals use it — it is that they use it without governance. The credential sets a clear, honest expectation for doing it well.
How is AI governance assessed?
Through scenario-based questions — for example, judging whether an AI-generated forecast can be relied upon — where you must make and justify the call, the way a competent professional does on the job.
How to prepare for the AIPC
The AIPC rewards applied judgement, so the best preparation is deliberate practice on material you already know — a schedule you have maintained, a cost report you have issued, a forecast you have defended. For each, ask the three questions the certificate examines: would I trust this output, can I explain it, and would I sign my name to the decision it implies?
Practise the judgement pattern
Take any AI-assisted output — a summarised contract clause, a predicted overrun — and write down what you would check before relying on it: data provenance, validation evidence, known failure modes and the consequence of being wrong.
Keep a validation log
For a few weeks, record every AI output you accept, amend or reject at work, and why. The habit of documenting the disposition is exactly what the governance module assesses.
Rehearse the explanation
Explain one model-assisted result to a non-technical colleague until they could defend it to an auditor. If you cannot, you have found your study gap. The sample questions show the assessment format.
The applied task, the cycle and the pathway
What does the applied AI task involve?
You are given realistic project-controls material — for example a model output, a dataset or an AI-drafted narrative — and asked to evaluate it, decide what a competent professional should do next, and justify that call. It assesses reasoning and governance, not coding; you are never asked to build a model.
How do I keep the certificate current?
The AIPC runs on a three-year CPD cycle. Relevant continuing development — applied AI work, structured learning, contribution to the profession — is recorded against the CPD framework and submitted for renewal.
If I later sit a PCI examination, is the AIPC wasted?
No. The AIPC covers the flagship credential's AI core and can count toward the full PCL-AI; how the credit is applied is confirmed at enrolment. Many candidates use it as a staged route — prove the governed-AI capability now, then complete the wider discipline when their experience allows.
