How accommodation requests are handled
Requests are reviewed individually and confidentially against the accessibility statement and examination rules; the aim is a level field, not an easier exam. Typical arrangements include extended time, separate rooms and assistive technology — tell us what works for you rather than guessing at our categories.
Submit before booking your sitting where possible, with supporting documentation if you have it. Approved arrangements are recorded once and apply to future sittings unless your needs change. This information is used solely to administer your accommodation.
Describe the barrier, not just the diagnosis
The strongest requests explain how a condition or circumstance affects sitting a timed, proctored examination — reading speed, sustained screen time, concentration, mobility, or the exam environment itself — rather than only naming it. If adjustments have worked for you before, in study or at work, say so: a proven arrangement is the quickest one to assess. And if you do not hold formal documentation, submit anyway and say that plainly; PCI will tell you what evidence, if any, is actually needed rather than turning the request away.
- The specific barrier, and when in the examination it would arise
- Adjustments that have worked for you in education or at work
- Any assistive equipment or software you normally use
- Whether the need is long-term or tied to a temporary circumstance
What requests often involve
Long-term disability
Where a disability affects how you sit the exam, arrangements such as extended time or a modified environment are assessed individually and, once approved, carried forward.
Temporary circumstances
An injury, recent surgery or a pregnancy-related need can justify adjustments for a particular sitting. Tell us the timeframe so the arrangement matches it.
Assistive technology
If you rely on a screen reader, magnification or similar tools, raise it early so compatibility with remote proctoring can be checked well before exam day.
Breaks and environment
Scheduled rest breaks, a separate room or other environmental adjustments are common requests. Agreed in advance, they are recorded so they are never mistaken for an irregularity.
Adjusting or revisiting a request
What if my request cannot be granted as asked?
You will be told the reasons in writing, and PCI will discuss workable alternatives before anything is closed. The aim is a level field, so a declined arrangement is a starting point for a conversation, not the end of it. If you believe the outcome is wrong, the complaints route remains open to you.
Can I update an approved arrangement later?
Yes. Approved arrangements carry forward between sittings, but they are yours to revisit — if your needs change, tell us and the arrangement is reviewed rather than assumed to stand forever.
Keep going
From request to confirmed arrangement
Typical flow: submit with any supporting documentation → acknowledgement with reference → individual assessment (we may ask a clarifying question) → written confirmation of arrangements, recorded so they apply to future sittings unless your needs change.
Submit before booking wherever possible so arrangements attach cleanly to your sitting; late requests are still assessed but same-day changes cannot always be operationalised. The measure applied is a level field — never a different examination.
