How the scheme is structured
- The credential. The PCI AI Project Controls Leader (PCI PCL-AI), a single credential covering the integrated controls discipline.
- The competency model. Thirteen domains — from accounting foundations and cost control to AI governance — assessed as one connected whole rather than separate subjects.
- The assessment. A scenario-based examination that tests applied judgement in realistic project situations, not recall of definitions.
- The decision. An independent certification decision, kept strictly separate from any training, so a pass reflects assessed competence alone.
- Maintenance. Ongoing recertification and continuing professional development, so the credential reflects current competence rather than a one-off achievement.
Principles behind the scheme
- Competence-based. The scheme certifies what a professional can actually do, against a clear, published standard.
- Criterion-referenced. Everyone who meets the standard passes — there is no fixed quota or pass rate.
- Independent of training. The certification decision is separated from preparation, a core principle of credible certification.
- AI as a first-class competency. AI governance is assessed in its own right, reflecting how controls work is now done.
- Transparent and honest. The scheme is documented openly, and PCI is candid about its status.

How to read the scheme document
The scheme document is a working tool, not a formality. Different readers should approach it differently — and each gets something specific from it.
Candidates
Start with the competence standard and the assessment approach. Together they tell you what to prepare and how it will be tested. Plan your study against the body of knowledge rather than guessing at topics, and treat the eligibility rule as a gate to clear early, not late.
Employers
Check the separations. Who trains, who assesses and who decides should be distinct roles. Then check maintenance: a credential without recertification tells you what someone once knew, not what they can currently do.
Anyone comparing credentials
Ask whether the scheme is published, versioned and overseen by identifiable committees. A credential whose architecture cannot be inspected asks you to take its value on trust — which is exactly what a scheme document exists to avoid.
Change control
How the scheme evolves
The scheme is versioned and reviewed like any other governed document. Three questions come up most often.
What happens if the scheme changes while I am preparing?
You are assessed against the version in force for your examination window. Material changes are published before they take effect, and any transition arrangements are set out at the same time, so no candidate is caught between versions.
Can practitioners comment on the scheme?
Yes. Feedback from candidates, credential holders and employers feeds PCI's continuous improvement cycle, and substantive comments are considered whenever the scheme is reviewed.
Where does the operational detail live?
The scheme sets the architecture. Day-to-day rules — conduct, identification, retakes, accommodations — sit in the candidate handbook and the certification policies, which are kept aligned with it.
