Tools change; the test of a schedule does not. A schedule is defensible when a competent stranger can open it, follow the logic, and reach the same critical path you did. In practice that means:

  • Logic-driven networks. Every activity has predecessors and successors; dates fall out of the logic, not from constraints pinning them in place.
  • Discipline with constraints, lags and leads. Each one used sparingly, and each one explainable on demand.
  • Alignment to the WBS and the basis of schedule. The narrative and the network must tell the same story — reviewers check one against the other.
  • Honest float. Total float is a shared project asset, not something to hide or hoard.
